The rules and objectives of the game
The rules and objectives of Microsoft Gin Rummy are similar to the traditional Gin Rummy game. Here is a brief overview of how to play:
The game is played with a standard 52-card deck. Each card has a point value equal to its rank, except for face cards, which are worth 10 points each. Aces are low and can only form runs with the 2s.
The game begins with each player being dealt 10 cards. The remaining cards are placed face down in a Stock Pile. The top card of the Stock Pile is turned over and placed next to it, forming the Discard Pile.
The player who did not deal the cards goes first. On their turn, they can either Draw a card from the Stock Pile or the Discard Pile, or Knock if they have a low enough Deadwood score.
If they choose to Draw a card, they must add it to their hand and then Discard one card from their hand face up on top of the Discard Pile. The turn then passes to the other player.
If they choose to Knock, they must reveal their hand and arrange it into Melds and Deadwood. The other player can then do the same with their hand. The player with the lower Deadwood score wins the round and scores the difference between their Deadwood score and their opponent's Deadwood score. If the Knocker has no Deadwood at all, they score a bonus of 25 points for Ginning. If the Knocker has a higher Deadwood score than their opponent, they score nothing and their opponent scores a bonus of 25 points for Undercutting.
The game continues until one player reaches a predetermined score, usually 100 points. The player with the higher score at that point wins the game.
In some game modes, such as Oklahoma, Straight, Hollywood, and Manual 3-2-1, there are additional rules and variations that affect the gameplay. You can learn more about them in the game's help section.
The different game modes and difficulty levels
Microsoft Gin Rummy offers five unique game modes that you can choose from, each with its own challenges and rewards. They are:
Classic: This is the standard Gin Rummy game mode, where you can play against a computer opponent or a friend on the same device. You can also choose from four levels of difficulty: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert.
Oklahoma: This is a variation of Gin Rummy where the value of the first card turned over at the beginning of each round determines the maximum Deadwood score allowed for Knocking. For example, if the first card is a 5, you can only Knock if you have 5 points or less of Deadwood. If the first card is an Ace, you can only Gin. If the first card is a Spade, the scores are doubled for that round.
Straight: This is a variation of Gin Rummy where there is no Knocking. You can only end the round by Ginning or by going Down,
